Metadata

Metadata is data about data.

Using metadata will improve access to information and enable development of better search, retrieval, and organizational tools.

The e-Government Interoperability Framework now incorporates government policy on metadata.

The Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (DCMES) is the building block of Web metadata.
It contains 15 broad categories for creating simple, easy-to-understand descriptions for most information resources.

Additional semantics will be needed to fully describe resources.
However, with DCMES as the basic building block, other metadata can be combined with it to form richer descriptions.
